Lucid recalls sedans, including models from the years 2022 and 2023, due to a faulty component. About 2,000 luxury electric vehicles were affected by the recall after the company identified a potential issue with the high-voltage coolant heaters (HVCH) in these vehicles.

The faulty HVCH, responsible for controlling the temperature of the battery and other vital components, may impact the performance and safety of the vehicle. In some cases, it could prevent the car’s EV system from functioning properly.

“Lack of defrost capability poses a safety risk due to a possibility of obstructed driver vision,” Lucid said in a recall report on Friday.

The recall affects Lucid Air sedans, which have gained popularity for their sleek design and advanced electric technology. Since March 2022, Lucid has been investigating complaints about loss of cabin heat due to High Voltage Coolant Heater (HVCH) failures. The company removed all problematic HVCH units produced before July 2022 from its inventory by November 2022.

In November 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informed Lucid about a Jaguar Land Rover recall due to similar HVCH issues. After a thorough investigation, Lucid’s Product Safety Executive Council concluded in January 2024 that an HVCH failure, resulting in a sudden loss of defrost capability, poses a significant safety risk.

Lucid has assured customers that the company’s service centers will be responsible for replacing any faulty HVCH parts. An estimated 1% of the 2,042 vehicles affected by the recall could experience potential delamination in the HVCH.

This news has led to a dip in Lucid’s stock market performance, with a noticeable fall in pre-market trading following the announcement. Despite this, Lucid remains committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers, underlining its dedication to addressing the issue promptly and efficiently.

As the recall process begins, it serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with the rapid evolution and adoption of electric vehicle technology. It underscores the importance of stringent quality control measures in the production process to ensure the safety and reliability of these vehicles.

Lucid’s swift action to address the issue reflects its commitment to customer safety and product quality, key factors that will continue to play a significant role in the company’s future growth in the increasingly competitive EV market.
