The US government has launched a substantial investment of $325 million for EV charger repairs, enhancement of EV technologies, and workforce development. This initiative, spanning three programs, is aimed at increasing the resilience and reliability of publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

The primary focus of this funding is to address existing issues within the EV charging infrastructure across the nation. It will facilitate the repair and replacement of non-operational chargers, with a particular emphasis on enhancing accessibility in underserved communities. Additionally, a significant portion of the investment is dedicated to driving down the costs associated with EV batteries.

Recent developments on January 18 saw the United States allocate nearly $150 million for projects spanning 20 different states. These projects will concentrate on the repair or replacement of approximately 4,500 existing electric vehicle charging ports, addressing a crucial need within the EV charging network.

This substantial financial commitment is part of the larger $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The NEVI program is made possible by the $1 trillion 2021 infrastructure law, reflecting the government’s commitment to the expansion and improvement of the EV charging infrastructure. Under the NEVI program, participating states are required to operate federally-funded charging stations for a minimum of five years, with a stringent 97% uptime requirement.
