Alberta wildfire season has officially begun ahead of usual schedule, according to recent reports. The traditional period for wildfires in the province, which typically spans from March 1 to October 31, has been declared to start earlier due to prevailing weather conditions. This early declaration comes in response to Canada’s unusually mild winter this year.

Todd Loewen, minister of forestry and parks, announced the beginning of the fire season earlier this week. The province’s decision was motivated by the need to protect communities and ensure adequate resources are available to respond to potential wildfires.

The minister emphasized the community’s concern over the threat wildfires pose to homes and livelihoods. In response, the province now requires a permit for all burning activities within the forest protection area.

Preparatory measures for the wildfire season have been in progress for months, according to Loewen. The province boasts a ready force of 900 firefighters, set to be bolstered by 100 more, pending budget approval. This addition will form five new 20-person crews.

How to Keep Safe

In March 2023, Canada was affected by a record-setting series of wildfires, with increased intensity observed starting in June. This resulted in significant damage and displacement of residents, highlighting the serious threat posed by wildfires.

Wildfires can have devastating effects on communities located in forested or grassland areas. As such, the government is urging residents to take proactive steps towards wildfire preparedness. These steps include creating defensible space around properties, having an evacuation plan in place, and staying informed about current wildfire risks and conditions.

As the Alberta wildfire season gets underway, the government’s focus will be on ensuring that resources are in place to manage potential fires and protect communities. The early start to the season is a clear sign of the challenges posed by climate change, and the need for proactive measures to mitigate its impacts.
