The Ford F-150 Lightning, introduced a few years ago, is considered a first-generation product by The Blue Oval. To keep costs low and speed up the development of the electric pickup truck, it shares similarities with its traditional combustion engine counterparts.
Recent hints suggest that the second-generation Ford F-150 Lightning will have notable differences. A preliminary agreement between Ford and the United Auto Workers (UAW) offers further insight.
According to the Ford–UAW agreement, the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center (REVC) in Dearborn, Michigan, will handle production of the F-150 Lightning throughout its life cycle. Interestingly, the roadmap also reveals that an “all-new EV truck” will join the REVC assembly line.
It remains unclear if the all-new Ford EV truck mentioned for the REVC facility is indeed the second-generation Lightning. However, according to Ford Authority, there’s a high probability that it is.
Ford previously gave a specific date for when production of the second-generation F-150 Lightning would begin: August 18, 2025.
Ford previously announced that its next EV truck would be built at Tennessee’s BlueOval City complex. However, since the gas-powered F-150 is currently built at multiple plants, it makes sense that the second-generation F-150 Lightning would be assembled at multiple plants too.
With that said, the new EV truck that will be produced in Michigan could also be a completely different truck. Ford is currently working on a new electric truck that it has codenamed Project T3. Ford hasn’t yet publicly disclosed whether Project T3 refers to the second-generation Lightning or an entirely new truck.
Ford filed a trademark application for the name “F-200” at the US patent office in August 2023. This has resulted in rumors that the Project T3 truck might be named “Ford F-200 Lightning.”
The rumored Ford F-200 Lightning would feature an innovative design, albeit less unconventional compared to Tesla’s Cybertruck. It would also benefit from frequent over-the-air software updates.
