Ambient Photonics, a pioneer in indoor solar cell technology, today unveiled its revolutionary technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024. Backed by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and leading venture capital firms, the company is set to redefine the way we power smart home devices with its unique dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC).

A New Dawn for Powering Smart Home Devices

“Our cutting-edge technology will play a crucial role in powering the next generation of smart home devices,” said Bates Marshall, Co-Founder & CEO of Ambient Photonics. “We aim to eliminate the reliance on disposable or rechargeable batteries, making connected electronics more sustainable and efficient.”

Ambient Photonics’ DSSC offers up to three times more power than competing solutions, even in dim conditions. This breakthrough is thanks to the company’s revolutionary molecules that enable high-performance solar cells for mass-market devices.

“Ambient light power is key to achieving efficiency and sustainability, keeping billions of batteries out of landfills and minimizing carbon emissions,” Marshall added.

The company’s commitment to a greener future extends beyond enhanced power output. By replacing thicker, heavier batteries with sleeker, more sustainable solar cells, Ambient Photonics enables manufacturers to create more eco-friendly and elegant products.

Introducing Bifacial Solar Cell Technology

Another groundbreaking innovation Ambient Photonics showcased at CES 2024 is its first bifacial solar cell. This technology allows the solar cell to harvest light energy from both the front and back simultaneously.

“Our bifacial solar cell technology is a game-changer for all kinds of devices,” highlighted Marshall. “It allows connected devices to power themselves more effectively in ambient light and can be designed and mounted in flexible ways, performing regardless of shape or orientation.”

Practically, this means a device equipped with Ambient Photonics’ Low-Light Indoor Bifacial Solar Cell technology can harness power from two sides, generating more energy. For instance, a remote control integrated with this technology could power itself whether it rests face-up or face-down.

Partnerships Powering Sustainable Tech

Ambient Photonics has successfully enticed leading manufacturers to integrate its solar cells into mainstream electronics. Universal Electronics, makers of remote controls and smart home devices, will present its new ETERNA remote control platform featuring Ambient Photonics solar cells at CES 2024.

Chicony, a leading developer of personal computing products, has partnered with Ambient Photonics to power its new sustainable, wireless keyboard. Additionally, the company is collaborating with electronic paper tech pioneers E Ink to integrate solar cells into next-generation electronic shelf labels for retailers.

As Ambient Photonics continues to revolutionize indoor solar technology, the future of powering smart home devices looks bright and sustainable.
