Car theft is a major concern, with over a million vehicles stolen in the US last year. However, recent data from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) reveals an interesting fact. The data shows that the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 are the least-stolen cars in the US.

When adjusted for vehicle registrations, the Model Y and Model 3 both have relative claim frequencies of 3. These figures are the lowest for any US vehicle models, electric or nonelectric.

According to CleanTechnica, the starting price for the Model 3 is $40,240 (for the rear-wheel-drive trim) and $47,240 (for the improved range trim). The high-performance trim, offering increased horsepower, is priced at $53,240.

The Model Y, on the other hand, comes in two trims. The Long Range trim starts at $50,490 and the Performance trim starts at $54,490.

Why Tesla is the king of auto safety

Interestingly, it’s not the price tag that makes these Teslas less attractive to thieves. Instead, it’s the security features and technology that are integrated into the vehicles.

The most notable of these features is Sentry Mode. Sentry Mode is a surveillance system that acts as a deterrent against theft. It’s a game-changer in car security.

Sentry Mode activates when the car detects someone approaching too closely. It continues to operate even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. The system leverages cabin cameras to record potential wrongdoers, making it easier to identify them.

These recordings can be accessed through the Tesla app. They provide victims with evidence to share with law enforcement.

Furthermore, Tesla vehicles include GPS functionality within the official app. GPS enables owners to track their cars on a detailed map. As a result, locating a stolen vehicle becomes significantly easier, leaving thieves with limited options for escape.

Besides the Model 3 and Model Y, there are several other cars with low theft frequency, such as the Volvo XC90, GMC Acadia, Tesla Model X, Volvo XC40, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Lexus UX 250, and Volvo XC60.

What can you do?

If your vehicle is not on the low-theft list, there are several precautions you can take.

Opting to park in well-lit areas with functioning surveillance cameras is always a smart choice. Motion-activated lights can also deter potential thieves, especially in suburban or high-risk areas.

Another security measure is investing in a steering wheel lock, which adds an extra layer of protection to your vehicle. While it may not have the same high-tech features as Tesla, it acts as a physical barrier against theft.

Lastly, it’s important to be aware of the most stolen vehicles. While owning one of these cars may not make you a target, it can result in higher insurance premiums. Some theft-prone Hyundai and Kia models have experienced difficulties in even obtaining insurance.

With increasing concerns about vehicle thefts, choosing an unattractive car to thieves can provide peace of mind. Tesla’s advanced security features in the Model 3 and Model Y serve as excellent examples of how technology can protect your investment.

Regardless of your vehicle choice, taking proactive measures to safeguard your vehicle is crucial in today’s world.
